Chemicals are part of our everyday lives and are used in common products, such as cleaning solutions, pesticides, and building materials. Thousands of chemicals are also used in industrial and manufacturing processes. Because chemicals can be toxic to humans and the environment, regulations and guidelines help to monitor their manufacture, use and disposal. However, emergencies involving chemicals can and do happen. This training aims to provide learners with an introduction to chemical emergencies and response. This training focuses on large-scale releases of chemicals that can have a significant public health impact.
Learning Objectives:
- Explain how a chemical’s physical form and properties affect the severity of a chemical incident and necessary emergency response
- Identify 3 factors that influence the severity of health effects that result from chemical exposure and the relationships between those factors
- Name 8 chemical emergency response activities and the role public health plays in each activity
