Functional Needs & Psychosocial Support Readiness Series

Description: 
The Functional Needs and Psychosocial Support Readiness Series consists of three courses that cover advanced planning and response considerations in emergency management. Individual courses cover the need to understand Disaster Mental Health issues when responding to disasters, the importance of Vulnerable Populations considerations when planning your response, and the significance of adhering to the principles and strategies of Crisis and Emergency Risk Communication when addressing both the public and the media.
Learning Objectives: 
  • Define disaster mental health and what issues it encompasses
  • Identify at least three activities public health workers can engage in to address mental health issues during the different stages of the emergency management cycle
  • Identify local agencies that may assist in providing mental health services
  • Describe the difference between the terms victim and survivor

  • Identify non-traditional solutions to communications barriers
  • Identify the role of public health in evacuation and special needs shelters
  • Define crisis and emergency risk communication
  • Describe three emergency scenarios that might need to be addressed by a public health department
  • Define at least two of the five fundamental communication strategies that allow communicators to prepare effective messages for their target audience
  • Identify four tactics that can be utilized to address some common public reactions to information during a crisis
  • Describe how the public health department staff may be expected to work with the media
  • List and define at least two of the seven recommendations for crisis and emergency risk communication
